About

Hugh Metcalf is a technologist, musician and collaborator based in Essex, UK.

Hugh’s current project explores the relationship between technology, performance and composition with his self-designed performance rig that records and processes audio into new patterns, soundscapes and compositions. The performance rig comprises of self-programmed DSP software, eurorack synthesiser modules, guitar effect pedals and self-designed hardware controllers.

The system is designed in a way that audio can be thrown into it at intervals or by chance and these segments are then organised into something structured but also unexpected. By taking snapshots of the audio passing through, processing these segments and organising them into patterns, new compositions are created during a performance. Hugh is currently building an album of work using this composition method whilst building on the technology.

Previously, Hugh has collaborated on various projects with artists supporting their success including Not Cool, Lucy Cheung, Susan Aldworth, Helen Pynor, Jack Hucthinson, David luximon of Vive la Rose, Olga Danylyuk, Dave Stewart, Emma E. Maclennan and The Bookshop Band.
